We hope you have fun decorating your school this season and we want everyone to have a Happy Christmas, here are a few tips to help you stay safe:

  • Electrical items such as Christmas lights are likely to have been put away for nearly 12 months so they may have been damaged in storage. Before putting your lights up, always conduct a visual inspection of the overall condition of the wiring to ensure there are no broken or cracked sockets or bare and frayed wires: HS F23b Visual Inspection Checklist Latest.docx
  • Put your Christmas tree in pride of place but make sure it’s a safe distance away from radiators or other heat sources, doorways, and high traffic areas.
  • If you’re going for an artificial Christmas tree this year, pick one that is labelled fire resistant.
  • Whatever type of Christmas tree you pick, install it in a stable base.
  • Decorative paint and artificial snow can look very attractive but remember aerosol cans use flammable propellants so don’t use them near heat sources.
  • If you’re using extension cords make sure they’re not going to trip up anyone.
  • Don’t overload sockets and extension cords.
  • Don’t use staples, nails, or tacks to hang electrical cords and make sure electrical cords aren’t placed at an angle which pinches them.
  • Don’t use outdoor lights inside as they burn hotter. LED lights are the best to use. They use far less energy and don’t expel any heat.
  • Turn off your Christmas lights before you leave each day and before you leave for the Christmas break.
