Somerset Council is committed to reducing the risks to employee’s wellbeing when using display screen equipment (DSE) and all computer peripheral equipment. Although computers are of benefit to us all, they can cause problems if incorrectly used. Even if a user has never experienced any difficulties, they need to be aware of the potential health problems associated with using DSE and understand what can be done to prevent them. Comfort, support, and variety are the keys to health and safety when using DSE.

What is DSE?

DSE are devices or equipment that have an alphanumeric or graphic display screen and includes display screens, laptops, touch screens and other similar devices.

Who should be given a DSE 1 form (maintained schools)

Users who regularly use DSE as a significant part of their normal work (daily, for continuous periods of an hour or more). This will also include teaching staff using DSE equipment during their PPA time.

How often should the form be distributed?

DSE 1 Form (Schools Only) should be issued to new starters and to staff using DSE every 2 years, or when circumstances change such as the office layout, new or expectant mothers or if an employee has an injury or concern about their DSE set-up. Premises managers should issue the DSE 1 form for staff to complete and return to them to assess and help staff address any of their issues.

What are the health risks with DSE?

The problems associated with using DSE fall into three main physical categories:

  • Eye problems;
  • Postural problems;
  • Stress and tiredness.

These are not unique to DSE users, nor are they an inevitable consequence of using DSE at work.

Top Tip – The 20-20-20 rule:
Relax your eyes; every 20 minutes, look away from the screen at an object at least 20 feet away for a period of 20 seconds or more.
