A Safety Alert has been issued following the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) identifying contaminated non sterile alcohol free wipes linked to an ongoing outbreak of Burkholderia Stabilis.
Contaminated wipes have resulted in serious infections, including hospitalisation and one UK fatality.
About Burkholderia Stabilis
Burkholderia Stabilis is naturally found in soil and water and poses a minimal risk to healthy individuals; however, it can cause a serious infection by entering broken or damaged skin and can pose a significant risk for vulnerable people.
Wipes Identified as Unsafe (Do Not Use)
- ValueAid Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
- Microsafe Moist Wipe Alcohol Free
- Steroplast Sterowipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes
- Reliwipe Alcohol Free Cleansing Wipes (contaminated with a different Burkholderia strain)
- RELIWIPE Alcohol‑Free Cleansing Wipes 10’s
Required Actions for Schools
- Immediately remove and dispose of affected wipes in household waste.
- Check all first aid kits for non‑sterile wipes.
- Ensure all wipes intended for wound care are clearly labelled “sterile”
- Replace removed products with sterile wound cleansing wipes compliant with BS 8599‑1.
Recommendation
Check all First Aid kits held on site to ensure that products are in date and contain a contents list. Details can be found within Appendix A of the HSG012 First Aid Guidance
