Manual Handling for Stages and Equipment
When organising Christmas and seasonal events, it is important to assess all manual handling tasks involving stages, props, and equipment. Remind staff to use safe lifting techniques such as:
- Keep loads close to the body.
- Avoid twisting or leaning sideways.
- Move smoothly and adjust items after placing them down.
- Ensure clothing and footwear do not obstruct movement.
- Use mechanical aids (trolleys, lifts, hoists) where possible and ensure they are well maintained and suitable for the task.
- Receiving suitable training and instructions for manual handling tasks.

Posters and guidance can be purchased and displayed in prominent locations such as the school hall or staff room.
Nativity Hazards and General Christmas Safety
Risk assess all nativity and Christmas activities, including stage setup, lighting, hall organisation. Common hazards to consider include:
- Trips and falls from cables, props, or uneven surfaces.
- Manual handling injuries from moving scenery or heavy items.
- Fire risks from decorations and electrical equipment
- Overcrowding in performance areas.
Ensure all staff and volunteers are briefed on safe working practices and keep escape routes clear and ensure fire safety measures are in place. Supervise children closely during rehearsals and performances. Remember to report any incidents or near misses via the Accidents section on EEC.
