The Stress Guidance sheet now includes an Appendix with an OFSTED Inspection Risk Assessment template. This update reflects the discussions that have been taking place with the recognised unions around the recognition that the process of an OFSTED inspection is a foreseeable stressor for school staff and leaders.
Why this matters:
The local authority as the employer of the staff employed in our LA maintained schools holds responsibility for managing these risks (for academies, the Trust is the employer.) This responsibility cannot sit solely with school leaders. Accurately assessing and managing stress risks helps protect staff wellbeing, supports compliance, and reduces the risk of adverse outcomes for individuals and the school.
Key points about the new risk assessment template:
- The risk assessment should be accompanied by a risk register and individual well-being plans for senior leaders.
- It should be reviewed termly and after each inspection notification.
- Ofsted’s pause/well-being protocol should be embedded in your school’s approach (see Gov.UK guidance).
- The risk assessment is also available as a Question Set on EEC under “OFSTED” risk area with the title “Union Considerations”.
Implementation and feedback:
We have committed to review the effectiveness of the risk assessment and would recommend using it for a few months and Head teachers are encouraged to share feedback on how the assessment works in practice and can do so by completing this form: OFSTED Risk Assessment template feedback form. The NAHT will also collect feedback from members and share outcomes once the assessment has been used.
Next steps:
- Download and review the amended guidance with risk assessment template.
- Begin using the template for upcoming inspections and termly reviews.
- Share feedback with the Health & Safety Service and NAHT.
