We have published updated guidance for schools on managing pests and wildlife safely and effectively on school sites.
Pest and Vermin Management – Info Sheet 83 sets out practical arrangements to help schools prevent, identify and respond to common issues such as rodents, ants, wasps, gulls, foxes and badgers, while protecting pupils, staff, visitors and property.
The guidance includes:
- clear prevention measures covering buildings, food areas, waste and grounds
- roles and responsibilities for headteachers, premises staff, catering teams and contractors
- a clear reporting and response process, including when urgent action is required
- species‑specific advice focused on proportionate, lawful and humane management
- reminders about risk assessment, COSHH considerations and record keeping
Schools are asked to ensure that relevant staff, particularly premises and catering teams, are familiar with the guidance and that local arrangements reflect the principles set out in the guidance document.
