The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has prosecuted a Manchester-based construction firm, A1 Property Maintenance Management Limited, for failing to manage asbestos risks during renovation works at the former Unicorn Public House in Eccles. Despite visible asbestos debris and a prohibition notice issued by HSE, the company allowed further construction without completing a full asbestos survey. This breach of Regulation 4(6) of The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 resulted in a fine of £5,360 and costs of £5,117.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the legal and moral duty to manage asbestos safely. The HSE continues to promote its campaigns “Asbestos and You” and “Asbestos Your Duty” to raise awareness among tradespeople and duty holders responsible for non-domestic buildings.
Why This Matters: Mesothelioma and Asbestos Exposure
Mesothelioma is a cancer almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure. It can take 20 to 30 years after exposure for symptoms to appear, and by the time it is diagnosed, it is almost always fatal.
Symptoms may include:
- Shortness of breath
- Persistent cough
- Wheezing
- Extreme tiredness (fatigue)
- Pain in the chest or shoulder
