Somerset Council’s Health and Safety Service has issued a new Safety Alert regarding the risks associated with magnetic gate catches. This follows incidents at Somerset and Cornwall schools involving protruding mag lock plates and failures of mag lock brackets. Both issues present a significant risk of injury to staff, pupils and visitors.
Please ensure the content of this alert is reviewed urgently by relevant site, premises and safeguarding staff.
Summary of Key Hazards
• Protruding magnetic catch plates positioned around 150 cm from ground level can present a head injury risk for adults and taller pupils
• Plates may protrude into pedestrian routes, especially where gates are used frequently or during busy periods
• Mag lock brackets can fail if not secured with appropriate fixings, creating a risk of falling components
• Aluminium gate and door frames may be unable to support the weight of mag locks long term
Immediate Actions for All Schools
• Add interim high visibility markings or hazard tape around magnetic plates to increase visibility
• Complete a gate specific risk assessment on EEC under General → Gates and Fences
• Report any significant incidents, near misses or concerns through EEC to ensure monitoring and trend analysis
Required Safety Measures
• Inspect all mag locks, brackets, fixings and gate or door frames for signs of looseness, strain or deterioration
• Pay particular attention to installations on aluminium doors or frames and consider temporary removal from use if concerns are identified
• Fit secondary safety measures such as straps or safety wires where necessary
• Ensure all installations comply with manufacturer specifications and use the correct fixings
Longer Term Considerations
• Review whether current mag lock placements align with manufacturer guidance
• Confirm installation was undertaken by competent contractors
• Consider alternative locking mechanisms where risks cannot be reduced adequately
