Somerset Council has published a revised Health and Safety First Aid Policy and supporting guidance which is for individuals present in the workplace, to ensure they have access to adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and personnel if they require prompt first aid attention if they are injured or taken ill at work.
It delineates the responsibilities of designated first aiders, details the location and upkeep of first aid equipment, and specifies the procedures for reporting and documenting incidents.
Key Highlights of the Revised First Aid Policy
Accessible First Aid Provision – All individuals in the workplace are assured access to adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities, and trained personnel.
Clear Responsibilities – Designated first aiders have defined roles, including providing immediate care, maintaining their qualifications, and documenting incidents. Premises Managers must assess first aid needs, ensure provision and upkeep of equipment, and facilitate training for staff.
Equipment & Facilities – Locations of first aid kits and equipment are clearly identified and regularly inspected. Employees are informed of who the first aiders are and where equipment is sited, ideally through posters and site induction.
Incident Reporting & Documentation – Procedures for reporting and documenting incidents have been clarified, reminding staff to report incidents and accidents via the EEC.
Training & Support – Who to book First Aider training with, making it easier for staff to access and maintain qualifications.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – The updated guidance includes a comprehensive FAQ section, addressing common queries about first aid provision, responsibilities, and training.
