The primary aims of Stress Awareness Month are to:

  1. Educate the public about the causes and effects of stress.
  2. Promote effective stress management techniques to enhance mental health and wellbeing.
  3. Encourage open conversations to reduce the stigma surrounding stress and mental health issues.
  4. Provide resources and support to help individuals and organisations manage stress effectively.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has a free online learning tool for managers Working Minds – Work Right to keep Britain safe. The course covers the 5R’s – Reach out, Recognise, Respond, Reflect and Routine and it looks at the actions managers can take to address stress in the workplace.

Somerset Council’s Supporting Wellbeing, Work Related Stress Policy and Guidance explain how our Self-Assessment and Talking Toolkit can be used to support staff. The Guidance document contains advice for managers and employees, as well as frequently asked questions. There is also a section on recognising signs and symptoms of stress.

Managers should make employees aware of the F15a which is an individual self-assessment questionnaire that enables employees to indicate how they are feeling and consider the aspects of work known to be factors in generating pressure. It can be completed by any employee or volunteer who feels they are experiencing signs or symptoms of stress. It’s quick and easy to complete.

If an employee raises concerns about their stress levels, or the manager notices signs that the employee may be suffering from stress, they should:

  1. Talk to them about it as soon as possible
  2. Ask them to complete form F15a
  3. Complete the  F15b with the employee to help identify any stress triggers
  4. Discuss the contents of F15b and discuss how to work together to improve matters so the employee feels less stressed at work which can include putting an action plan together to help reduce the feeling of stress
