As part of our commitment to reducing slips, trips, and falls across Somerset schools, staff are reminded to wear appropriate footwear during the summer months.
Slips, trips, and falls remain one of the most common causes of workplace injury and are largely preventable through suitable controls, including footwear selection. Footwear must be suitable for the work activity and environment to reduce the risk of injury to staff, pupils, and visitors.
Summer-Specific Risks
- Increased likelihood of:
- Wet floors from water play, cleaning, or spillages
- Dust and debris from outdoor activities are being brought inside
- Smooth surfaces become slippery when contaminated
- Inappropriate footwear choices (e.g., sandals, flip-flops), influenced by hot weather conditions
Footwear Expectations for Staff
- Wear footwear that is:
- Secure and supportive
- Closed-toe and closed-heeled
- Provides adequate grip for indoor and outdoor surfaces
- Avoid:
- Open-toe footwear (e.g, sandals, flip-flops)
- High heels or unstable footwear
- Shoes that offer little support or grip
These types of footwear are generally unsuitable for most school environments and may increase the risk of injury.
Actions for Schools Managers
- Remind staff of footwear expectations at team meetings
- Include footwear considerations in relevant risk assessments
- Challenge unsafe footwear in line with local procedures
- Report slip/trip hazards promptly and maintain good housekeeping
Reporting Incidents and Near Misses
Schools are reminded of the importance of reporting all significant slip, trip and fall incidents, as well as relevant near misses, through the EEC system.
Reporting helps us to:
- Identify recurring hazards and trends across Somerset schools.
- Share learning and good practice.
- Put preventative measures in place before an injury occurs.
- Ensure appropriate support and advice can be provided following serious incidents.
- Improve the overall safety of staff, pupils and visitors.
A near miss is an event where no injury occurred but where there was potential for harm. These events provide valuable learning opportunities and should not be overlooked.
