A new Noise Awareness training course for schools is now available on the Blackboard training platform, aimed specifically at Site Managers, Premises Managers and Caretakers.
The course has been developed following a recent review of the Somerset Council Noise Policy (HS028) and Noise Guidance, to ensure schools have clear, practical and proportionate guidance on managing noise risks in everyday school environments.
Noise is a common feature in schools and, while it is not always harmful, unmanaged or prolonged exposure can affect staff wellbeing, concentration and behaviour, as well as pupils and visitors. This short course focuses on helping schools recognise when noise may become a risk and what simple, sensible controls can be put in place.
The training covers:
• Common sources of noise in schools, including workshops, music rooms, halls and grounds maintenance
• The potential physical and psychological effects of noise
• Simple indicators that noise levels may need reviewing
• Proportionate control measures that work in school settings
• When a noise risk assessment may be required
• Consideration of neurodiverse pupils and staff who may be more sensitive to noise
The course is designed to be practical, accessible and non technical. It supports those responsible for managing school premises to take a sensible, risk based approach, rather than treating noise as an issue that automatically requires specialist equipment or hearing protection.
Site managers, premises managers and caretakers are encouraged to complete the training and use the content to inform local arrangements and discussions within their school.
For further advice or support on managing noise risks, schools can refer to the Noise Policy and Guidance or contact the Health and Safety Service.
