We are pleased to announce an updated Legionella Awareness course, is available on Blackboard. It can also be downloaded along with a quiz. This essential training is designed for all staff with responsibilities identified in the school’s Legionella Risk Assessment (LRA).
Who needs to complete the training?
- Any member of staff named in the LRA as having responsibility for the control of Legionella must complete this training as proof of competency.
- The LRA must be updated whenever there is a change in staff. Amend your LRA with the new details, ensuring changes are signed and dated.
Understanding roles and responsibilities
- Each school’s structure is unique. Normally, the Head Teacher is the Duty Holder.
- The Responsible Person (with day-to-day responsibility, authority, and competence) may be the Head Teacher, Business Manager, or Premises Manager, depending on your staff structure.
- There may also be a Deputy Responsible Person and staff involved in monitoring such as a Site manager or Caretaker.
When considering responsibilities, reflect on who makes key decisions. For example, if the school does not purchase temperature checks from SSE Property, the person who made that decision is the Responsible Person and must ensure an alternative monitoring method is in place.
Why is this training important?
Completing this training ensures everyone is clear on their responsibilities for Legionella control. Keeping your LRA up to date with current staff and responsibilities is a legal requirement and supports a safe school environment.
Next steps
All staff with LRA responsibilities should complete the Legionella Awareness course on Blackboard. After training, update your LRA to reflect who has completed the training.
